Belly Update: Yes to Potatoes

The good news is that I can eat potatoes! After taking a break, I decided to give them a try again. I’ve actually been eating a lot of potatoes lately and I feel fine. It was something else that I was reacting to instead of the potatoes. That sometimes happens, blaming one food, when it’s actually another. I’ve found that my reactions to food are delayed, usually about 24 hours later, which makes it difficult to pinpoint what food it is.


In this case, I was blaming the potatoes for a reaction I was having to rice milk. Rice Dream, in particular. It was not a good experience. I thought I’d try it to see if I could use rice milk in my recipes for a more neutral flavor. I should have done my research better. It turns out that Rice Dream is not tolerable to a lot of people. Most people blame it on possible trace amounts of gluten resulting from being processed with barley, but I’m thinking it may have to do more with the sugars in the milk, since I don’t think I’m that sensitive (if at all) to gluten. There isn’t any sugar listed in the ingredients, but they are there in the nutrition facts. So I don’t know what the issue is. Anybody have an experience with Rice Dream, or any insight? Anyways, I am glad I took a break from potatoes. I started eating sweet potatoes instead, which I’ve never been really sure if I can tolerate. I know now that I can! There’s another food I can happily add to my repertoire, in addition to the regular potatoes. I’m a happy camper now. Although since I am still sensitive to tomatoes, I will be keeping an eye on those nightshades.

  1. So glad they're back! Sweet potatoes can be a problem on Low FODMAP – maybe I can try to add them in?

     
  2. We are just starting on all of this. We use rice dream – better than almond dream for my daughter when we test by muscle testing. My question is – is Brown Rice / Brown Rice syrup ok? There is such conflicting info when I research lists of FODMAPs and fructose malabsorption.

     
  3. I honestly don't know about the brown rice syrup. I don't think it's been tested for fructose content yet. I think that the sugars in the Rice Dream are from brown rice syrup, so it's probably one of those things that you just have to test for yourself!

     
  4. Just an idea for you all to try making your own rice milk or almond milk. It
    s super easy just takes a bit of time, some soaking, a powerful blender and a "nut bag" or "juicing bag". A tad of vanilla in rice milk or a few drops of almond extract in almond milk makes the homemade freshness of these even better. All this can be researched easily if any part is unclear. There is a world of a difference between fresh dairy free milks and store bought. Plus you don't get any dangerous leaching chemicals from the cartons they use for store bought or unwanted ingredients.

Your brownie recipe has saved me numerous times:) I try to follow the 8 constitution diet because it's helped me the most out of anything I've tried in the world of alternative health.     My constitution is Plumotonia. Before I found out about this I had only a few vague ideas of all the things that my body doesn't tolerate but this list, when actually followed, proved that there's something to this and frankly, I don't care if it's all in my head. After two weeks you can feel a difference.
    So long story short your website is one of the only places I can find suitable recipes and you don't post junk either. You post tried and true delicious food. Thank you!

     
  5. Thank you Leandra! I have been wanting to try making my own milks, but have just not gotten around to it yet. I have not heard of the 8 constitutions, but will look into it. I say, if you feel better doing something, then go for it!
